What you can expect

  • Most trips to Dali stop at the lake and the old town. This one puts indigo on your own hands.

In the Bai village of Zhoucheng — known across China as the “home of tie-dye” — you'll sit with local artisans and make a piece of indigo-and-white cloth from scratch: fold and stitch the fabric, then dip it again and again into vats of naturally fermented indigo. Each soak deepens the blue, and when you cut the threads open, a crackled, one-of-a-kind pattern appears that no machine can copy.

Dali tie-dye is no souvenir gimmick. Listed in 2006 among China's first national intangible cultural heritage, it carries a thousand years of Bai life — butterfly motifs from the Butterfly Spring legend, blue for the Cangshan sky, white for the Bai ideal of a clean and honest heart.

Between dye vats you'll eat the way locals do: wild-mushroom hotpot, rose-petal fried goat cheese, sour-fish soup, and the river herb shui-xing-yang-hua — and share a traditional Bai three-course tea, the local welcome of bitter, sweet and lingering flavours.

Your two days, at a glance:
Day 1 — Picked up in Kunming, ride the high-speed train to Dali, hand-dye your own cloth in Zhoucheng, and wander the tie-dye night market before checking in to your 4-star hotel.
Day 2 — A slow morning along the old dyeing lane, then the train back to Kunming.

It's a small private trip — just your group, up to 6 — with an English-speaking guide, door-to-door from Kunming, every detail arranged so you can focus on the indigo drying on your fingers.
