Overview
See the other side of Copenhagen the way you would with a local friend. Your host is a Copenhagener who has lived here for many years, and the group is never more than 12. From the postcard houses of Nyhavn we cross the harbour to Christianshavn's canals and houseboats, walk through the free town of Christiania and continue towards the old naval yards of Holmen, as far as the group's pace allows. Along the way we stop twice for something sweet: coffee by the canal and cake at a local café.
Expect stories from everyday life, personal recommendations and plenty of time to talk about how Copenhagen really works. A conversation, not just a lecture.

Activity itinerary
Nyhavn
- 10m
Our walking tour begins in Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most iconic and colourful waterfront district. Once a bustling hub for sailors, merchants, and lively taverns, Nyhavn is now a favourite spot for both locals and visitors, with its charming rows of brightly painted townhouses and historic wooden ships docked along the canal.
Here, we’ll take a moment to soak in the lively atmosphere and admire the blend of history and modern life. Did you know this was once home to Hans Christian Andersen? He lived in several houses here while penning some of his most famous fairytales.
As we start our tour, let Nyhavn’s picturesque setting and rich stories welcome you to the heart of Copenhagen. From here, we’ll head towards Christianshavn and explore more of the city’s hidden gems.
Inderhavnsbroen
- 10m
Known as "The Kissing Bridge," this modern architectural marvel connects historic Nyhavn with Christianshavn. Officially opened in 2016, the bridge’s sliding mechanism allows boats to pass while creating the illusion of a kiss. Designed to blend with Copenhagen’s historic waterfront, it symbolises the city’s commitment to sustainable urban living. From here, enjoy panoramic views of iconic landmarks like Nyhavn, the Opera House and the Paper island. It’s a testament to Copenhagen’s ability to merge innovation with history.
Wilders Plads
- 20m
We stop at a canal-side café on Wilders Plads for coffee or tea, surrounded by old warehouses and canal boats, while your host tells how Christianshavn grew from Christian IV's trading hub into the canal neighbourhood locals live in today.
Broens Street Food (Pass by)
Broens Gadekøkken is a vibrant open-air food market that showcases Copenhagen’s love of global flavours with a local twist. Founded in collaboration with culinary pioneer Claus Meyer, it combines the creativity of Copenhagen Street Food with a focus on quality, community, and sustainability. Taste dishes inspired by the world but rooted in Nordic gastronomy, from tacos to traditional Nordic specialities. This is more than just a food court—it’s a cultural meeting point where locals and visitors gather over great food.
Snorrebro
- 5m
This charming, lesser-known bridge offers a quieter perspective on Christianshavn. From here, take in views of the iconic spiral tower of Vor Frelsers Kirke and the houseboats lining the canal. Once a bustling working-class area, Christianshavn has evolved into a vibrant mix of modern life and historic charm. Locals love Snorrebro for its tranquil beauty and sense of community—a reminder of Copenhagen’s slower, more personal rhythm amidst the city’s dynamic energy.
Our Saviour's Church (Pass by)
Our next stop is the magnificent Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke), a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and one of Copenhagen’s most recognisable landmarks. Its iconic golden spiral tower, with its 400 winding steps to the top, offers breathtaking views of the city for those brave enough to climb it.
Built in the late 17th century, this church has been a beacon of faith, art, and resilience for over 300 years. As we pause here, you’ll hear stories about its fascinating history, including the construction of its unique tower, which was completed in 1752.
This church is more than just an architectural wonder – it’s a symbol of Christianshavn’s vibrant history and community spirit. Take a moment to admire its stunning details, including the grand organ and the beautifully crafted exterior.
Lille Molle (Pass by)
Lille Mølle is a hidden gem nestled atop the 17th-century fortifications of Løvens Bastion. Originally a windmill built in 1783, it later became a private home filled with art and antiques. Now a museum, it tells stories of Copenhagen’s resilience and resourcefulness. Overlooking peaceful canals and lush greenery, this spot captures the harmony between history, architecture, and nature that defines the city. It’s a window into life as it once was—and how the past shapes the present.
Christiania
- 15m
As our small group approaches Freetown Christiania, we begin along the peaceful paths of Christianshavns Vold, the green ramparts that circle the area. From here, we continue with a short walk through one of Christiania’s quieter sections, giving you a gentle and respectful introduction to this unique neighbourhood.
Founded in 1971, Christiania is known for its creative energy, alternative lifestyle and strong sense of independence. On the small group tour, we avoid the busiest parts and instead follow a calmer route that still lets you experience the atmosphere and see some of the area’s character.
As we move from the leafy ramparts into the colourful back lanes, you’ll notice nature, quirky architecture and artistic touches that define Christiania’s identity. It’s an easy, relaxed way for the group to get a glimpse of one of Copenhagen’s most fascinating places without the usual crowds.
Gunboat Sheds (Pass by)
These historic gunboat sheds tell the storey of Copenhagen’s maritime defence during the Napoleonic Wars. Built after the 1807 British attack, the sheds housed small, nimble gunboats designed to protect Denmark’s waters. Today, they’re repurposed as artist studios, embodying the city’s knack for preserving history while fostering creativity. As you explore this area, note how these modest buildings once played a crucial role in Denmark’s resilience and how they now serve as symbols of renewal and reinvention.
Copenhagen Opera House
- 5m
- Admission ticket not included
Copenhagen’s Opera House is a striking symbol of modern Danish design and generosity. Gifted to the city by Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, its dramatic architecture bridges Copenhagen’s historic core with its innovative future. Inside, its world-class acoustics set the stage for extraordinary performances, while its location on Holmen nods to the city’s naval heritage. From its grand terrace, enjoy views of Amalienborg Palace and the Marmorkirken, a historic axis connecting Denmark’s royal past to its cultural present.
Operaparken
- 20m
This green urban oasis combines rich plant life with thoughtful, modern design. At its centre stands Væksthuset, a striking glass greenhouse that houses tropical and subtropical plants right in the middle of Copenhagen. As our small group walks through the surrounding themed gardens and along the quiet waterways, you’ll get a sense of how the city blends nature, culture and everyday life in a seamless way.
The tour finishes at Væksthuset, where everyone can enjoy a delicious slice of cake, included in the price. It’s a calm and inviting place to relax together and round off the experience while appreciating Copenhagen’s sustainable, people focused vision for city living.
