What you can expect
Begin your journey at 7:00 AM from Ella, travelling by tuk tuk with a friendly and experienced local driver-guide. Cover around 100 km of scenic up-and-down mountain roads, taking you deep into Sri Lanka’s untouched hill-country landscapes.
Visit around seven beautiful waterfalls — not the biggest, but incredibly picturesque and perfect for photographers and nature lovers. Each stop offers its own charm, with opportunities for short hikes, refreshing views, and peaceful moments in nature.
Along the route, explore a rich variety of local flora. This area is like a living botanical garden, where you can see black pepper vines, Sri Lankan cinnamon trees, cocoa, rubber plantations, and arecanut palms. Your guide will introduce you to the plants, spices, and trees that make this region so unique.
Begin at the iconic Ravana Falls, located just outside Ella town. Easily accessible from the main road, this powerful cascade plunges dramatically from a rocky cliff near the historic Ravana Cave. If you’re a keen swimmer, take a refreshing dip in the cool pool beneath the falls.
Continue to Pallewela Waterfall, a hidden gem nestled within the forest, reached via a scenic 1 km walk. The waterfall flows through five gentle cascades, surrounded by lush greenery and birdsong. It’s an ideal spot for photography, relaxation, or a peaceful swim.
Next, visit the Secret Waterfall, a serene multi-tiered cascade with natural pools hidden in the jungle. The short, adventurous walk to reach it rewards you with tranquil surroundings and crystal-clear waters. It’s a true hidden paradise still untouched by heavy tourism.
Next, visit Visari Ella, also known as Alikola Oya North Falls. This 20-meter-high cascade lies deep within the forest, fed by the Punagala and Alikola rivers. With its calm pool and gentle access trail, Visari Ella is an inviting stop for both nature lovers and casual hikers.
Continue to Ellawala Waterfall, a beautiful jungle falls near Wellawaya. Only about 10 metres high, it’s famous for its natural pool at the base — perfect for a cooling swim. Less crowded than Ravana or Diyaluma, Ellawala offers a more authentic, local experience.
End your waterfall adventure at Diyaluma Falls, the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka at 220 metres. Famous for its natural infinity pools, Diyaluma offers stunning panoramic views over the Badulla highlands. Swim in the upper pools, and enjoy a picnic by the falls, hike along the ridge, or simply soak in the incredible scenery before heading back to Ella.
