Description

Underground homes, an easygoing lifestyle, and the rainbow colours of opal combine on a tour that shows you why Coober Pedy is a such special place. Check out the sights around town, learn about the mines that fill its landscape, and get an inside look at life in this fascinating unique community.

Your guide takes you out of the centre of town to visit a working opal field, where you get to know the mining methods that draw the stones out of the Australian desert. Step into a former mine to see traces of opal still embedded in the stone.

Next, visit the Breakaways for a look at the colourful sandstone outcrops that jut out from the desert. Get some spectacular views over the Moon Plain, once the bottom of a vast inland sea, and see a tiny stretch of the famous 3,400-mile-long (5,600-km) Dingo Fence.

You then head back beneath the surface for a visit to the Serbian Orthodox Church, a spectacular display of traditional Serbian architecture carved right into the sandstone. Get a look at the dugout homes to see how locals live and pick up a few tips on gauging opal quality before you finish with a ride back to the hotel.
