Head off from Crete's capital city of Heraklion eastwards to the coastal peninsula which is the location of some of the island's most enchanted villages. The town of Aghios Nikolaos (St Nicholas) is one of Crete's biggest, and features a mythical lake which is said to be bottomless. Up the coast is Elounda, a picturesque fishing village nestled in the lovely Mirrabello Bay. Plaka is another village further up which is directly opposite the small islet of Spinalonga. This was the site of historic defence of Elounda harbour.
