What you can expect

This 5 to 5.5 hour tour includes tickets so you can Skip the Lines and make the most of your time in Amsterdam. Get a solid dose of art and culture by exploring two of Amsterdam’s most important institutions. This private combo tour allows you to explore the city’s largest museum, the Rijksmuseum, before following in the footsteps of the country’s most famous artist, Rembrandt.

First, head to the Rijksmuseum, Holland’s version of the Louvre, housing an impressive collection that curates Dutch history over the centuries. For those who aren’t familiar with Dutch culture, we will explore its rich and vibrant past through a selection of paintings and artefacts from the 8000 objects on display. We’ll explore familiar names like Rembrandt while discussing lesser-known items like 17th-century dollhouses. By the end, you’ll have a good overview of the museum’s collection and you may even know how to pronounce its name correctly.

After lunch, spend the afternoon tracing Rembrandt’s Amsterdam. Begin by following your guide through the Spiegelquarter, the traditional district for all things art and antiques. You’ll then walk onwards towards the Keizersgracht, or Emperor’s canal, to learn about one of Rembrandt’s best-known apprentices. In Rembrandt Square, discover the Night Watch Guards – one of the artist’s most famous works – which is recreated in bronze sculpture. In Staalstraat, learn about the local Drapers Guild, represented by Rembrandt. Finally, in Waterloo Square, you will discover the former Jewish Quarter, home to a variety of immigrants including Rembrandt and his wife. The couple spent many years living here, near the Amstel River, where their house still stands as a museum dedicated to the artist’s life. It includes etchings and other works done by Rembrandt himself. The furnishings are authentic to the 1600s, reconstituted thanks to auction archives from the period. Wander Rembrandt’s office and see how he produced his work, peeking at the more intimate side of the artist’s life.
