I had previously posted a three star review based on my check-in experience. This was aimed at the failings of Expedia, rather than the hotel. However, the hotel instantly responded with a room upgrade and fee waiver that was more than generous.
This hotel is exceptionally clean and has been updated everywhere. All the staff were helpful and friendly.
The location can not be beat. Outside the front door is the BART station (to and from the airport), two Cable car lines, the F Tram (up to Castro district and all the way to Fisherman's wharf), plus the subway and numerous buses.
Within walking distance are Union Square, Chinatown, City Hall, and the major theatres.
In the lobby is a tiny cafe that serves delicious coffee and pastries in the mornings, and has a surprisingly diverse menu available. Very friendly servers.
The only downsides to the hotel are that some of the surrounding streets are sketchy in the daytime and possibly dangerous at night (stick to Market Street or take an Uber), and some of the rooms overlooking the Cable Car terminus are noisy.
Highly recommend it.
