Named after an Aboriginal word for ‘lagoon’, Nagambie went through that all-important rite of passage for becoming a town – getting a post office – in 1870. Lake Nagambie was formed by damming the Goulburn River in 1891, and today it’s one of Nagambie’s most well-known features. Nagambie is also well-known as the birthplace of champion racehorse Black Caviar.

Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park is the best way to see the lake for yourself. Hire a kayak or canoe and explore the lake at your own pace, or take it easy on a river cruise. Dangle your rod from boat or shore and catch some fish! You can also take a Jet Ski or water ski or simply take a walk around the shores of the lake. When the sun goes down, it’s a great place for a picnic. Visit the Nagambie Golf Club to play golf in the green surrounds of the lake. And if you want some adventure, Nagambie offers skydiving from 15,000 feet – the highest in Victoria. Falling out of a plane will show you a different side to Nagambie, to say the least!

Next to the lake you’ll find High Street. The heart of town in Nagambie, this quiet strip is filled with colonial buildings, neat green parks and memorials. Wander this long stretch of road to uncover some of Nagambie’s unique shops, restaurants and wineries. You don’t have to stick to the middle of town if you love wine either. There are vineyards on the Goulburn River with restaurants and Goulburn River views to go with your glass of Shiraz.

Want to get close to Nagambie’s natural scenery? Tahbilk Wetlands has more than four kilometres of walking tracks and boardwalks. It’s the home of endangered species like the Small Scurf Pea plant and the freshwater catfish.
