Dunedin Day Trips

Want your mind blown by staggering scenery, rip-roaring adventures and truly wild wildlife? Yep, it's a no-brainer. Time to head off on a day trip to discover the magic of the Otago region.

Otago is nothing if not wild and dramatic. It has a long sweeping coastline inhabited by seals, penguins, sea lions and birds, and dreamy sandy beaches perfect for swimming. There are mountains and vineyards, coastal forests and historic gold trails. We could go on, but we'd be here all day.

Dunedin is the provincial capital, offering a tip-top choice of day trips. Head off by train, guided tour or car to explore; be back in the urban comforts with a cold beer in your hand by nightfall. It's the perfect combination.

Below are some must-read tips on where to go when you're planning a trip near Dunedin

Otago Peninsula

  • Cameras at the ready! This is prime wildlife-spotting territory. The area has it all, from penguins to seals, sea lions and royal albatross.
  • Go foraging for cockles and clams at remote and tranquil Papanui Inlet. They'll taste even better because you plucked them yourself.
  • Take a scenic drive along Highcliff Road, where the ocean crashes on one side and harbour villages nestle on the other. Trust us; it's truly spectacular.

Moeraki Boulders

  • Have some giants lost their marbles, or what? It's a fair question to ask as you look out on the huge round boulders strewn across Koekohe Beach near Moeraki.
  • At four million years old, up to two metres wide and weighing several tonnes, the boulders are one of the region's most visited geological attractions.
  • Head down to the beach at sunrise or sunset to take some creative photos. You'll get years-years-of social media mileage out of them.

The Catlins

  • For a 360-degree view to beat all others, walk out to Nugget Point and its lighthouse, stopping to watch penguins as well as fur and elephant seal colonies along the way.
  • The 20-metre Purakaunui Falls have all the key elements of a fairy wonderland. Native forest? Check. Chirping birds? Check. Tinkling water? Check.
  • The name Cathedral Caves says it all. Enjoy the sound of your own voice as you belt out a tune in these gargantuan tidal caverns.
