Negombo may not have the pristine beaches of other eastern Sri Lankan towns or the grandeur of Colombo to the south, but it does have amazing reminders of its fascinating history – like the Dutch canals that crisscross through the city and breath-taking sites like the Muthurajawela Marsh – as well as the great surf beaches to the north. Back in the 16th and 17th centuries, spices were like gold and the cinnamon that grew around Negombo made it a trading hotspot. To move the spices, the Dutch built a series of canals that add up to 120km in length.
