    Pocket Guide: Waikato

Our wide range of Waikato hotel accommodation lets you enjoy all the region has to offer. The Waikato region has two spectacular landscapes - one above ground, the other below. In both cases, nature has been generous. Our Waikato hotels are perfectly positioned to allow you to explore on the lush surface, the scenery which is green to the extreme. Fertile soils, reliable rainfall and kind temperatures have created a pastoral heaven.

Our Waikato hotel accommodation also makes a great base for appreciating what is below the surface. Miracles have been wrought with water and limestone. Vast cave systems, huge sink holes and underground streams provide huge scope for adventure.

Waikato was the scene of significant battles during the Maori Land Wars of the mid 19th century. Visit the monuments and museums and discover the fierce history of the region.

In the fast-growing city of Hamilton, the serpentine beauty of the Waikato River is maximised at every opportunity. You can discover parks, gardens and river walks where the forethought of the town planners is plain to see.

If you’re heading to Waikato Stadium to watch a Test Match, or support the regions local Super 14 team, the mighty Waikato Chiefs, we have hotels near Waikato Stadium, that will save you precious time and money.

Our Waikato hotels and Waitomo accommodation is perfect for enjoying the areas special features:

    Waikato River

The mighty Waikato River travels through the region. At 425 kilometres from end to end, it is the country’s longest river. As well as providing recreational opportunities, the river drives eight hydro dams.

    Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves were formed over 30 million years ago, and drip by drip they’re still changing. The natural beauty of stalactites and stalagmites lit by the blue light of glow worms has to be seen to be believed.

On a Matamata sheep farm, you can visit the remnants of Hobbiton, the hobbit village created for the Lord of the Ring’s movie trilogy. View the hobbit holes and find out how the set was created on a guided tour.

    "fabulous birthday stay"
We went to the Hilton for my husbands birthday. They were fabulous. They upgraded us as part of the birthday treat. We went to the Bistro Lago next door for dinner and had a wonderful dinner and were treated very well.

Frontage and entry is good, but reception is on second floor. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Secure parking should be included in the price (not an extra). Room very small, but did provide for our needs.

A very comfortable place to stay for a night. Close to the town and waterfront but far enough away to feel out of the hustle and bustle. The quiet was amazing and the complimentary breakfast in the dining room an added bonus.

    Admiralty Lodge Motel

"Nice motel close to Buffalo Beach"
We'd stayed here 15 years ago when it must have been close to new. The room we had still felt fresh but there were small things that were a bit "off" - the (hidden) toilet cistern ran intermittently, the microwave door was cracked, the curtain around the bed (?) was partly off the track, and the bathroom toiletries were all in large, wall-mounted containers, which always makes me feel like I'm at a gym! BTW, we didn't use the curtains round the bed and slept fine (the front door is glass and there's a verandah light, and the vertical blinds didn't meet in the middle which means the sun comes streaming in). Lots and lots of ceiling lights ... but where are the switches? A-ha, in the corner behind the TV and hidden by the vertical blinds! A bit of attention to the small things and Admiralty Lodge would still be one of the better places to stay in Whitianga, despite there being newer motels nearby. However, we saw a "for sale" sign up at the entry for the management contract so maybe there won't be much "improvement" under current management as they wait to sell. The beachside walk into town (or the beach itself at low tide) isn't a long one and a very pleasant way to "earn" a coffee and cake at The Fig Tree.
