Coloane is a pleasant surprise when you travel to Macau, smoothing out the edges of a city well-known for its casinos and sparkling modern buildings. The island is the southernmost portion of this Special Administrative Region of China, easily forgotten under the growing shadow of the Cotai Strip right next door. Take that step and you’ll be welcomed by a mountainous region with clean air, hiking trails, sleepy intriguing village scenes and even a beach or two. Book one of our Coloane hotels and you’re there!
There may be no better place than Coloane Village to see the mix of Portuguese and Chinese heritage that makes Macau what it is today. An authentic town atmosphere hovers over the shophouse-lined streets, rustic buildings and mix of sights like St. Francis Xavier Chapel and Tam Kung Temple. You’ll enjoy stopping at local fruit stands for some fresh and juicy snacks as much as you enjoy the beautiful, cobblestoned Eduardo Marques Square and nearby promenade.
While Coloane is relatively quiet compared to the rest of Macau, its attractions are popular with locals and visitors alike. The island’s two beaches, Hac Sa and Cheoc Van, sit on the south coast and are hot spots for visitors on the weekend. Both have swimming pools near the waterfront but the sea and sand at smaller Cheoc Van is good for a dip. You’ll often see local swimming association members taking to the water – just think carefully before following them in during winter!
The hiking trails that wind around the terrain are good enough – and perhaps short enough – that they also attract sizeable crowds over the weekends. Not only do they offer lovely views over the coast, but you can visit a reservoir and A-Ma Cultural Village, which has monuments and a museum. This is a side of Macau not to be missed by travellers fond of the outdoors but hitting the hillsides early or on weekdays is advisable whether for mountain biking or trekking.
This rural corner is more than an afterthought for holidaymakers planning to travel to Macau. A fine place to base yourself, this is one area that you’re sure to fall in love with. Book a flight to Macau and take your pick from our Coloane accommodation selection to discover the culture behind the metropolis!
