▶ SEA TURTLES:
Between May 1 to Oct. 31, Melbourne Beach gets thousands of turtles at night that come up on the beach to lay eggs. You may see groups from the Archie Carr Turtle Research Center a few blocks up the road walking on the beach.
You MUST adhere to the following rules during these months, or you may be subject to a $10k fine by the City of Melbourne Beach:
- ALL indoor and outdoor lights visible from the beach must be shielded,
repositioned, replaced, or turned off from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Bright beach lights, flashlights, flash cameras, video recorders, and other types of artificial lighting of any kind are prohibited.
- You CANNOT have any white lights on when you are on, or near the beach at night. They MUST be RED.
- Please CLOSE all window shades and curtains in all rooms at night to prevent the sea turtles from being attracted to the house lights.
