Ancient artefacts have been excavated in the area, indicating that people lived in Changwon as long ago as 10,000BC! However, it wasn't until 1400AD that the region was officially named "Changwon". This name came about with the combination of two prefectures: "Uichang" and "Hoewon".

Things to see and do

Don't miss Jehwangsan Park, also known as Owl Mountain, which is home to a nine storey tower. At the top of the tower, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding area but you'll also find the Jinhae Museum inside the tower, which gives some interesting insight into the city's past.

If you're looking for something to do for the day, you can hang out at the Changwon Science Centre or the Changwon Marine Park, where there's a theme park and a navy battle museum. Then relax in the Mageumsan Hot Springs or go bird watching at the Junam Wetlands Park.

There are a few shopping centres in town, so shopaholics won't be disappointed. When meal time rolls around, you'll have a wide range of cuisines to choose from. There's everything from Irish pub meals to Indian food and from Italian to American-style fast food. Make sure you try some traditional Korean food while you're here though. Indulge in all the kimchi, grilled meat and gimbap you can get your hands on and wash it all down with some soju (Korean liquor made from rice).
