Aussies spend budget windfalls on travel

Aussies are planning to spend any extra cash from interest rate cuts and budget bonuses on travel, according to a new survey by travel website Wotif.com.

More than 90% of Aussies surveyed said they would spend any extra windfall from recent interest rate cuts on a holiday.

Wotif.com Brand General Manager Megan Magill said beach destinations were the pick for a budget-conscious holiday.

“More than 25% of Aussies told us they’d use their extra cash for a holiday on the Gold Coast and 24% said they’d head to Thailand to save money on their next getaway,” Ms Magill said.

Queensland on the up this Labour Day long weekend

Accommodation bookings across Queensland have increased by over 15% for the Labour Day long weekend this year compared to 2011, according to leading accommodation website Wotif.com.

Regional Queensland in particular has seen growth of more than 30% for the Labour Day long weekend this year, with places like Port Douglas and Cairns proving popular.

Megan Magill, General Manager Wotif Brands, said the figures were encouraging for the region with growth in most holiday destinations around the state.

“We’re seeing lots of people going away in Queensland for the long weekend this year which is great,” Ms Magill said.
