With its tempting cellar doors, gorgeous scenery, and\u00a0fantastic antiques centre<\/a>\u00a0all just a 2hr drive drive from Sydney, you\u2019ve got to wonder why you\u2019re not there already. We ask Jennifer White \u2013 a Mittagong local and Big Tulip campaigner \u2013 to tell us a little more about what makes her town special.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best thing about living in Mittagong?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s a safe, small, and intimate community. It\u2019s great for my family \u2013 my kids can play in the streets.<\/p>\n

What annual events or festivals should people visit Mittagong for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Southern Highlands are home to one of Australia’s oldest floral festivals – Tulip Time<\/a>, which has been operating continuously for 58 years. It\u2019s the region\u2019s flagship event, attracting more than 60,000 visitors every year for the two-week spring celebrations. Events include a street parade, a mile run, puppet workshops for the kids, and, of course, mass plantings of tulips, with over 75,000 planted in Corbett Gardens alone!<\/p>\n

We also have Australia\u2019s only pie festival \u2013 Pie Time<\/a>, every June.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Coffee?<\/h4>\n

The Shaggy Cow at 112 Main Street, Mittagong. It\u2019s award-winning, with excellent food and coffee, as well as a great local wine list.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Pub meal?<\/h4>\n

The Lion Rampant Hotel at 75 Main Street. Great food in a relaxed atmosphere.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Breakfast?<\/h4>\n

Four Seasons Bistro at 24 Bowral Road. They specialise in delicious vegetarian, vegan, and raw food \u2013 yum!<\/p>\n

\u2022 Meat pie?<\/h4>\n

Gumnut Patisserie on the corner of Cavendish and Dalton Streets. You have to try the award-wining Eden Pie \u2013 it\u2019s braised overnight in a special beer from the Eden Brewery across the road.<\/p>\n

Chelsea Bakery at 2\/86-88 Main Street. A local favourite!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best free thing to do in Mittagong?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Box Vale Mine Track. Go for a bush walk along a historic railway line that takes you past coal mine cuttings and through an 84m rock tunnel. Or for something more relaxing, have a picnic at Lake Alexandra.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s something surprising about Mittagong that only locals know?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mittagong is home to Australia\u2019s first tennis court. It\u2019s located at the historic Fitzroy Inn<\/a>. Also, Australia\u2019s first Prime Minister \u2013 Sir Edward Barton \u2013 had a summer house in Mittagong. It was up for sale earlier this year but, unfortunately, it\u2019s already been snapped up.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Mittagong\u2019s best-kept secret?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mittagong is home to Australia\u2019s first ironworks \u2013 the Fitz Roy Ironworks, which opened in 1848. The exposed remains are heritage-listed and located in the underground car park of the Highlands Marketplace, so you can take a look before you do your shopping.<\/p>\n

Why should Mittagong win the Next Big Thing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We don\u2019t have a Big Thing of our own. The closest one is the Big Potato, but it\u2019s a bit old and doesn\u2019t attract a lot of visitors.<\/p>\n

A Big Tulip would be an added attraction to our yearly and historic Tulip Time festival. Tourism and hospitality are our biggest employment sectors and a Big Thing would help support them.<\/p>\n
