Here are my tips.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>IN THE TROPICS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Check out the <strong>Cairns Botanical Gardens<\/strong>. Entry is free and it\u2019s the best place to see a huge variety of tropical plant life and some of the rarest plants in the world, like the famed Amorphophallus titanum or \u201ccorpse\u201d flower. With self-guided walks, gardening advice, a rainforest boardwalk, beautiful bird life, and a special garden showing the traditional Aboriginal uses for many native plants, you will leave well-informed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/f0ff9b01d000c9df5d24ed3822efdc2d.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Need something to do? Look no further than the <strong>Cairns Esplanade<\/strong>. Not only has the Esplanade got plenty of places to eat, you can swim in the lagoon all year round (no stingers!). Every week, there are free fitness classes, from Pilates to aqua aerobics, volley ball training to Zumba. For the families, there are multiple playgrounds to entertain the kids, including a splash zone. Make sure you check the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cairns.qld.gov.au\/whats-on\/whats-on\">Cairns Council calendar of events<\/a>\u00a0before you leave home, as there is plenty of entertainment throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/f421a92c36f00626675865b01ac6c156.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>MARKETS GALORE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What better way to experience the region than visiting a local market? Check out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cairns Esplanade Markets<br \/>\n<\/strong>Open 8am to 4pm every Saturday. Locally made products, from jewellery to homewares, clothes to\u00a0skincare.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rusty\u2019s Markets, Cairns City<br \/>\n<\/strong>Open 5am to 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 5am to 3pm on Sundays. Get your fix of tropical fruit! Rusty\u2019s is the place to go for fruit, veg, and a host of international food and beverages. It also has specialty stalls selling chocolate, jewellery, and\u00a0coffee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Port Douglas Sunday Markets, Anzac Park<br \/>\n<\/strong>Open 8am to 1pm every Sunday. A great market featuring local products, boutique art, souvenirs, and local\u00a0produce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>HIKE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Barron Falls<\/strong> is an easy 1.2km walk from Kuranda (the village in the rainforest). It has a spectacular waterfall, which is particularly mesmerising after a heavy rain. If you feel up to it, the <strong>Barron Gorge National Park <\/strong>has a great network of walking trails and you can even raft down the river (for a fee).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/e0c1645e8d72d94be06cd747e7cac6b9.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>HOW\u2019S THE SERENITY?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While you\u2019re in the Barron Gorge National Park, make sure you check out the <strong>Crystal Cascades<\/strong> &#8211; a secluded freshwater swimming hole. Here you\u2019ll find a picture-perfect setting: small waterfalls cascading into pools surrounded by giant boulders \u2013 yes please! It\u2019s off the beaten path, but there are still plenty of facilities, including BBQ and picnic areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/1c07f891b11df06a524a04c3ed3bb550.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>BEACHES (OF COURSE)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Take a walk along <strong>Four Mile Beach<\/strong> in Port Douglas and hike up to <strong>Island Point<\/strong> for a beautiful view of the area, or stroll along Palm Cove\u2019s tropical beach. If you have a car, there are lots of beaches dotted along the coast from Cairns to the Daintree Rainforest. Just watch out for stinger season &#8211; generally October to May.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/24c89bf5d2144f5f351082b03844af5a.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>RETAIL THERAPY \u2013 BROWSE OR BUY?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stroll down Macrossan Street for a spot of shopping in Port Douglas. Wander through boutique clothing and art stores, then grab a coffee or a takeaway lunch to enjoy in Rex Smeal Park.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>SITTING AT THE DOCK OF THE BAY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Check out the mix of gorgeous luxury private yachts at <strong>The Reef Marina, Port Douglas. <\/strong>You\u2019ll also see dive and cruise vessels, as The Reef Marina is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>INDIGENOUS CULTURE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can\u2019t leave Tropical North Queensland without a visit to the <strong>Daintree Rainforest<\/strong>. Where better to start than <strong>The Mossman Gorge Centre? <\/strong>It has an Indigenous art gallery, a shop selling handmade gifts made by local Kuku Yalanji artists, a caf\u00e9 that combines local produce with traditional bush ingredients, and a shuttle into the Gorge (for a small fee). It\u2019s a great starting pointfor learning about the Daintree, the Gorge, and the traditions of the Kuku Yalanji people.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.lemediavault.com\/images\/29bd71a86d9e2212ab613d07ee875d28.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0;\"><strong>MANGO WINE AND MUCH MORE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a car, try a drive to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wotif.com\/Atherton-Tablelands-Hotels.d6034575.Travel-Guide-Hotels?brandcid=WOTIF-au.social.FACEBOOK.NOV17-PD-CHEAP-AND-FREE-BLOG.generic&amp;utm_source=FACEBOOK&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=all&amp;utm_campaign=NOV17-PD-CHEAP-AND-FREE-BLOG\"><strong>Atherton Tablelands<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(90km south of Cairns) for a raft of experiences. Visit Tolga Bat Hospital ($20 per adult, $10 per child, bookings essential), or check out the 70m crater at Mount Hypipamee National Park.
