But if that feels a tad extreme, a road trip might be the way to go. Leave early to get to Paraparaumu Beach in time for the 9am ferry to Kapiti Island (note: you\u2019ll need to apply for a Department of Conservation permit first). It\u2019s one of NZ\u2019s oldest and most important nature reserves, and home to kiwis, blue penguins, k\u014dkakos, and more. At 3pm, take the ferry back, then drive on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wotif.com\/Napier-Hotels.d2593.Travel-Guide-Hotels?brandcid=WOTIF-nz.display.WOTIFINSIDER.JUL17-BEST-NZ-ROAD-TRIPS-BLOG.generic&amp;utm_source=WOTIFINSIDER&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_content=all&amp;utm_campaign=JUL17-BEST-NZ-ROAD-TRIPS-BLOG\">Napier<\/a>. But it\u2019s the final destination &#8211; Aoraki Mount Cook National Park \u2013 that puts it on the bucket list. Check out The Red Tarns and Kea Point Trackor the Hooker Valley Track for an easy day hike, or take it easy and stay up late. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wotif.com\/Mount-Cook-Hotels.d2390.Travel-Guide-Hotels\">Mount Cook<\/a> is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve \u2013 the only dark sky reserve in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only eight in the world \u2013 making it one of the best places on earth to do some stargazing. Pro tip: Hike to the Slate Hut (6km return) or the Mud Hut (18km return) and bask in the incredible scenery. Then head back and drive onto Queenstown, where you can wine, dine, and luxuriate \u2018til your heart\u2019s content. Don\u2019t worry about the calories. You earned them \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>From Rotorua<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\">Rotorua to Gisborne<\/h4>\n<h5 style=\"text-transform: none; margin-top: 0px;\">Return driving time: 7.5 hours<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/wotif\/ads\/2017\/wotif-insider\/bestquickie\/600px-wide-7.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With awesome beaches, boutique wineries, and fantastic scenery, this trip\u2019s a winner for surfers, foodies, and\u2026 well, everyone. Stop at Opotiki for kayaking, river rafting, horse riding, and swimming, or take the ferry to Whakaari (White Island), New Zealand\u2019s most active volcano (eek!).
