You don’t want to notice your finger is over the lens or that you weren’t actually recording until it’s too late!

Remember to charge your equipment’s batteries every night. You don’t want to run out of battery during the day.

Remember you’re telling a story. It’s often helpful to have a few angles of something you are filming. So say if your Mum is eating an ice cream on the beach, you might shoot a wide shot to show the location and then a close up shot to see how yum the ice-cream looks.

Put people in their best light. If the sun is behind YOU, or to your side, your subject will be lit the best.

Play with fun stuff like slow motion. Just don’t do it the whole time.

Shoot a variety of things. You don’t need to spend too long filming one thing, people want to see all the different things you get up to on your holiday.

Have fun! The more fun you have the more fun your footage will be.

DON’T

Don’t shoot in portrait mode. Always shoot with the camera on its side (landscape mode).

Don’t feel like you have to be shooting the whole time.

Don’t get worried about the moments you’ve missed or trying to make certain things happen.

Don’t stress out. Everything you do is going to be personal and there is no wrong footage.

Don’t put any other effects on your footage – you can add these after you’ve finished filming.

Do you have a young Spielberg on your hands who you’re planning to let loose filming up a storm these summer holidays?
