But for those in the know, Canberra is way more than museums, politicians and that gorgeous lake (hint: delicious dining and killer coffee is just the start). Here\u2019s my guide to spending 48 hours in Australia\u2019s coolest capital &#8211; yep, I\u2019m calling it!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">9AM: Fuel up<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12160\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/c7b7d12c-109098-56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you need coffee to feel human, you\u2019ll basically be a superhero by the time you\u2019ve had a sip of the goods at <a href=\"https:\/\/kyocoffeeproject.com\/\">KYO Coffee Project<\/a> in Braddon. There\u2019s pour over for the true fanatics and regular barista stuff for the rest of us &#8211; however you take your coffee, they\u2019ll take it seriously at KYO.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">11AM: Wander around Parliament House<\/h2>\n<p>If you visit Canberra and don\u2019t stop into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Visit_Parliament\">Australian Parliament House<\/a>, is it really a visit to Canberra? A guided tour of this iconic landmark is the best way to go, especially since there are a few options beyond a standard parliamentary poke-around. One tour option focuses on the involvement of First Nation peoples in Australian politics and another homes in on the building\u2019s distinctive architecture. There\u2019s even a gin-tasting experience, included as part of the Signature Tour. Yep, this place has changed a lot since you last stopped in on a school excursion!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">1PM: See the strokes of the greats<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12174\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/1f65259c-the-national-gallery-of-australia-is-full-of-one-beautiful-artwork-after-another..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"434\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Get lost among the 150,000-strong collection of artworks \ud83d\ude32 at the truly awesome <a href=\"https:\/\/nga.gov.au\/\">National Gallery of Australia<\/a>. There\u2019s something for everyone at the NGA &#8211; you\u2019ll spot everything from Indigenous works to pop art and, from March 5th until June 14th, a whole heap of greats from Van Gogh to Vermeer in the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/nga.gov.au\/masterpieces\/\">Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London<\/a> exhibition. (We\u2019re talking 450 years of artistry and this exhibition is the largest group of works to travel outside of London\u2019s famed gallery\u2026 ever!) If you still want more to gawk at, don\u2019t forget to take a turn around the peaceful sculpture garden outside, too.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">2PM: Watch the masters work<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12158\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/3ee41a90-107701-56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you but watching my food being prepped is almost as fun as eating it (almost!). That\u2019s why I reckon a kitchen-bench booking at <a href=\"https:\/\/eightysix.com.au\/\">eightysix<\/a> is one of the best seats in Canberra. From here, you can watch the talented crew do their worker bee thing to prep the seasonal (and always delicious) menu and get the jitters for whether that next perfectly prepped plate is yours. Talk about anticipation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">4PM: Sample some of the city\u2019s best<\/h2>\n<p>Canberra\u2019s the nation\u2019s capital, sure, but it\u2019s also gaining a bit of a rep for being a craft beer brewery capital! Stop into faves like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bentspokebrewing.com.au\/\">Bentspoke Brewing Co.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalbrewing.co\/\">Capital Brewing Co.<\/a> to see what all the fuss is about (and if you can\u2019t choose a brew, a tasting paddle is a great option).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">7PM: Be a rebel<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12169\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/8222c9e6-a-feast-for-all-your-senses-awaits-at-rebel-rebel..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rebelrebeldining.com.au\/\">Rebel Rebel<\/a> in New Acton is the perfect place to book a table if you want a taste of the new Canberra dining scene. The menu is confident, bold and seriously tasty (how else would you describe the dessert of sunflower, cedro, citrus leaf and ice cream \u201csanga\u201d?)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">9PM: Hunt down a late-night bevvie<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to do a bit of careful looking to find <a href=\"https:\/\/italianandsons.com.au\/bacaro\">Bacaro Wine Bar<\/a>, a 50-seat wine bar hidden at the back of an Italian restaurant. Brace yourself for indecisiveness &#8211; the wine list is BIG. This little gem knows a thing or two about extra special touches &#8211; every guest has access to free WiFi and movies, a 24-hour lounge bar stocked with complimentary tea and coffee and a virtual, in-room mini-bar, where you can order bevvies straight from your bedhead via a tablet. Yep, they\u2019ve thought of it all!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">Sunrise: See the city from a new angle<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12161\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/0a07eb35-104713-56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not an early riser? Break the habit just this once! Canberra is a wonderfully green city and there\u2019s no better way to take it all in than with a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over its rolling hill outskirts. Some trips even reward you for your crack-o\u2019-dawn start with a glass of champers after.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">8AM: Grab a pick-me-up<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a strong one after rising with the sun and we reckon <a href=\"https:\/\/onacoffee.com.au\/\">ONA Coffee House<\/a> is up there with the best. Beans are roasted on-site (talk about fresh!) and every cup is prepared as carefully as the last. If you\u2019re peckish, there are always a few tasty faves on the menu (think bacon and egg rolls and, for kids, mouthwatering waffles).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">10AM: Learn a lesson or two<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12162\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/f189c5a9-101164-56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are more than a few tales to be told about the history of our great nation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nma.gov.au\/\">The National Museum of Australia<\/a> has Aussie heritage well and truly covered, from art to artefacts stretching back to the history of First Australians. There\u2019s are also a heap of tours and activities happening year-round &#8211; some are hands-on and great for little ones (interactive Kspace is a winner even with the busiest of kids!) and others are educational for all ages, like bush food lessons with Wiradjuri man Adam Shipp.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">12PM: Fuel up AND take a wander in the gardens<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12170\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/7fcfd70f-brunch-at-pollen-cafe-in-canberra-is-a-must..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"562\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The food is as fresh and bright as the decor at local fave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pollencafe.com.au\/\">Pollen Cafe<\/a>. It\u2019s all about classics done right &#8211; think fish and chips (with barramundi) or waffles with lemon curd and sweet almond dukkah. The other cool thing about Pollen? It\u2019s nestled in the Australian National Botanic Gardens, so you have plenty of pretty space to wander to work off your lunch.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">2PM: Get going<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12159\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/9df64295-109138-91.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city centres around pretty Lake Burley Griffin, so it\u2019s as much of a Canberra character as any local. Get better acquainted by spending the afternoon on a <a href=\"https:\/\/goboat.com.au\/\">GoBoat <\/a>&#8211; this cool little seaworthy vessel is group and picnic-friendly.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">4PM: Find a soothing spot<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12156\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-www-wotif-com\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/2021\/02\/54d0943c-109291-56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t pick Canberra as a wellness hub? Time to be proven wrong (not that it would take much convincing! \ud83d\ude09) <a href=\"https:\/\/halehealth.com.au\/spa\/\">Hale Spa<\/a> is an otherworldly wellness spot that leaves no stone (or service) unturned &#8211; you\u2019ll find saunas, steam rooms, spa treatments and a quiet little outdoor pool on-site.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;\">7PM: Sample somewhere different<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll feel like you\u2019ve been transported straight to Tokyo at the sleek Japanese eatery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rakudining.com.au\/\">Raku<\/a>. Like all good Japanese restaurants, you can expect sushi prepped with serious precision and care.
