Amazing! 4.4/5 Wotif Guest Rating

It doesn't get cuter than the night-time spectacle of hundreds of little penguins scurrying up the beach on Phillip Island. When the sun sets, these adorable blue-plumed birds make their waddling way from sea to shore in Australia's most utterly charming nightly ritual.

Make your way out of Melbourne, passing through historic suburbs and then more rural regions as you head toward the coast. Crossing over the bridge onto Phillip Island, watch for swooping sea birds and clusters of fur seals along the rocky shores. Arrive at Phillip Island Nature Park and spend some time in the visitor centre, where you can chat with guides and learn about little penguin behaviour, other native wildlife and local conservation efforts through interactive displays.

As the sun begins to set, head out to the pristine expanse of Summerland Beach and grab a spot on the boardwalk. When the waters grow dark in the evening, Phillip Island's 32,000 little penguins – 4,000 have burrows on Summerland Beach – swim in from a day of fishing and scamper to safety on the sand. A diminutive 13 inches (33 cm) tall, these tiny flightless birds are also called fairy penguins, and are the smallest penguin in the world.

Watch the magical procession as masses of penguins emerge from the waves and head to their nest in the sand dunes. When the parade is over and the penguins are snuggled in safely, leave this enchanting island behind and ride back toward Melbourne's city lights.
