In the heart of a UNESCO-designated tropical rainforest, atmospheric Kuranda offers plenty of opportunities to get up close to Australian wildlife. Travel along a scenic railway, tour the forest by land and water in a Duck and gain insight into the culture of the area's indigenous people.

In Cairns, grab a window seat on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. This historic train chugs over trestle bridges, waterfalls and deep ravines. Disembark in Kuranda and enjoy a morning at your leisure. Wander the artsy village's colourful market or visit attractions like the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.

At the Rainforestation Nature Park, a barbecue lunch of grilled meats, fresh fruit and delicious salads awaits. The adventure continues on an amphibious, World War II-era Duck vehicle as you explore the flora and fauna of this incredible ecosystem by land and by water.

Make your way to the rainforest amphitheatre. The Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience introduces you to Australia's indigenous people and their customs through a traditional dance, music played on the didgeridoo and hands-on activities like boomerang throwing.

At the Koala and Wildlife Park, follow a guide through various bush habitats as you take a look at creatures native to the island continent, from the creepy and crawly to the cuddly and cute. Crocodiles laze in the mud, wallabies hop up to greet you and koalas cling to tree branches.

Finally, climb into a gondola on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to skim over the forest canopy. This 4.5-mile (7.5 km) ride makes several stops along the way. Hop off to admire the tumbling cascade at Barron Falls Station and wander the boardwalk on the fern-covered forest floor at Red Peak Station before your return journey to Cairns.

Great tour! Included everything I wanted to do in one affordable package. Start with the Sky Rail where on your way you the village there are two stops for root to go to and take pix (inc Barron Falls). You're on a very tight schedule at Rainforestation. We missed our bus to Rainforestation due to a combination of confusion and our little one (17 months) having an accident. But when we got there they made a whole new schedule for us that allowed us to still get everything in! That was fantastic and we really appreciated it. Just in case this helps one other person, you don't catch the bus at the bus station right outside the SkyRail, you have to walk through the village to get to it.

Terrific tour. If anything, I would have liked it longer with a bit more time to see Kuranda Village. Scenic rail, cable cars, rainforest tour, wildlife sanctuary - a very full day but everything was just astounding.
