Step into the serene world of Mumbai’s wild side with the Bird Walk at The Karave wetland, one of Navi Mumbai’s most stunning and biodiverse wetland habitats. Located near the T.S. Chanakya Maritime Institute in Seawoods, this hidden ecological treasure is a vibrant birdwatcher's paradise, attracting thousands of migratory birds, including the majestic Flamingos.
Though situated right beside the bustling areas of Seawoods and Nerul, this wetland stretch remains rich in biodiversity, owing to its expansive mudflats, mangroves, tidal pools, and seasonal grass patches. These diverse habitats support a remarkable variety of birds.
During the walk, you’ll explore accessible paths along the wetland edges, where flamingos gather in large flocks to feed on blue-green algae and tiny crustaceans. The sight of hundreds of these elegant pink birds standing in shallow water, feeding, preening, and flying in formation, is nothing short of magical.
Apart from flamingos, you’ll also spot dozens of other wetland birds such as Stilts, Storks, Ibises, Herons, Sandpipers, Snipes, Plovers, Egrets, Cormorants, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, and the list goes on!
Depending on the season, lucky observers may also spot raptors like the Marsh Harrier or even migratory ducks and waders. This walk is led by trained naturalists and bird educators who help you identify bird species, understand their behaviours, and explore the interdependence between wetlands and birds.
The guides may use scopes, binoculars, and field guides to give you a deeper and more immersive birdwatching experience. Don’t worry if you’re a beginner, our walks are designed to be inclusive and informative for all levels of experience.
Expect a calm and unhurried walk, with plenty of time for observing, photographing, and learning. Each trail is also an informal conversation about Mumbai’s urban biodiversity, wetland ecosystems, and ongoing conservation efforts.
