Efate

If Vanuatu’s little islands are the jewels of the Pacific, then Efate is the sparkling crown. If you are looking for more than just an overseas beach holiday, this is the place to go.

While not Vanuatu’s largest, Efate is the most populous and most happening island. ‘Île Vate’ is where the capital Port Vila is, it’s where all international flights land and where most cruise ships and yachts dock before they go to the outer islands. It’s where you can swim under cascading waterfalls and blue lagoons, visit colourful markets, discover ancient history and explore stunning islets.

Frequently Asked Questions about Efate

What are some of the cheaper activities I can do in Efate?

A holiday on Efate doesn't have to break the bank if you mostly spend your time in the outdoors. The beaches and lagoons are free to enjoy and hiking around the island is a great adventure. Swim in the Blue Lagoon water hole, just a 45-minute drive from Port Vila. While not free, it's cheap and you can spend hours there. The capital Port Vila is a great place to stroll along the waterfront, visit the markets, get a cheap Asian or local meal and watch the world go by. The city is cheaper for accommodation too. To really bring your costs down and see the real Vanuatu, arrange a homestay and hang out with your host family during the day.

Is Efate expensive?

The cost of food and drink is similar to the prices in Australia, which is relatively expensive for the South Pacific Island region, but still affordable for many. One good thing about a holiday on Efate is that it's quite easy to go shopping in Port Vila or any of the towns, which means you can get cheap ingredients and meals at the markets. If you book a hotel or bungalow with a fridge and kitchen you can make most of your own breakfast and lunches at least. The other bonus is that transport is cheap compared to Australia and New Zealand, including the taxis and mini buses. And most of the fun outdoor activities, such as snorkelling, jungle hiking and swimming, are completely free of charge. The main island of Efate is cheaper than luxury stays on the surrounding tiny islands with private resorts. You can still make it as expensive as you like, of course, but homestays and bungalows in the smaller towns dotted around the island are very affordable.

Is Efate safe?

Good news: Cannibalism is a thing of the past in Vanuatu. We think, anyway, because nobody has complained about it for centuries now. Oh wait, you probably meant crime and natural disasters. In all seriousness, Vanuatu is generally safe and Efate has a good reputation. What's more, the people of Vanuatu are known to be really friendly and pride themselves on their honesty. This makes Efate a family-friendly destination. More and more resorts are now offering kids' clubs, so you can have some time on your own while they run wild and make new friends. Don't you go flaunting your wealth though. Like anywhere, if you provide the opportunity, some may take it to steal your cash and valuables. Be extra vigilant at night and also during the day in busy, touristy areas, such as markets and the Port Vila wharf and airport. Cyclones can occur, just like in Northern Australia, and because Vanuatu is on the Pacific Ring of Fire there is a chance of earthquakes too, just like in New Zealand.
