The house looked decent from the outside, though there were empty liquor bottles scattered around the yard. Upon arrival, I couldn’t access the property because the entry instructions weren’t provided as stated on the VRBO listing. Thankfully, I had family nearby to visit until the owner eventually sent the code.
Once inside, the home initially seemed fine, but several safety and maintenance issues became apparent. The kitchen and living room floors were noticeably slanted, and a cabinet door was missing with a rusty screw sticking out. The TV on the wall was crooked, and when I tried to adjust it, the entire mount moved—it was barely secured.
The biggest issue was the bedroom where my sister and baby slept. On the second night, the bed collapsed; it turned out the mattress was resting on six milk crates instead of a real frame or slats. I later found the broken pieces under the carport along with cleaning supplies.
I contacted both the owner and VRBO immediately. We canceled the seven-night stay and received a full refund. VRBO handled the situation quickly and professionally, while the owner said she would look into the condition of the property.
