Amalienborg is mostly comprised of a large octagonal courtyard surrounded by four classical palace facades. In the centre is an intricate statue of Amalienborg's founder, King Frederik V. It wasn't always intended to be a royal palace. After fire destroyed Christianborg Palace in 1794, the royal family bought the mansions in Amalienborg from the noble families that had built them and converted the four separate structures into the palace as we know it today.
As you stroll through the cobblestone courtyard, you cannot help to notice the Royal Life Guards. They patrol the palace 24 hours a day, clad in a similar uniform to the British Army Foot Guards. Follow their daily march from 11:30am at Rosenborg Castle to the changing of the guard in front of Amalienborg at noon. If you are lucky, you may also see the King's Guard and supporting marching band as they march alongside the Royal Life Guards when the Queen is in residence. On special events like the Queen's Birthday (April 16) you will see the guards in their most formal uniforms. Quite cool if your trip coincides.
Take your time and explore Amalie Garden (Amaliehaven), located between the waterfront and the Amalienborg Slotsplads. Designed by a Belgian architect, you will be amazed at the marble sculptures and the split level garden. Follow the canal north, a short 15 minute stroll takes you to the Little Mermaid, the icon of Copenhagen. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, she has overlooked the residents of the city since 1913. The surrounding neighbourhood is called Frederiksstad, no trip is complete without gazing in awe at the impressive Marble Church. It boasts the largest domed roof on any church in North Europe.
Wind up your afternoon with a stop in Nyhavn, just 10 minutes' walk south of Amalienborg. The 17th and 18th century canal-side townhouses have been lovingly restored in a huge range of bright colours. It's one of the most popular spots for the locals to unwind after a day in the office, and a brilliant place to enjoy summer (June-July), where the daylight lasts until 10pm at night. There are many great cafes and bars along the waterfront to choose from.
So wot are you waiting for? Plan your trip and choose your Amalienborg accommodation and flight to Copenhagen today. Take an unforgettable holiday into Danish wonderland, there's no time like the present.
