The area now known as Northbridge has been associated with the history of the region since the early days of settlement. The land was originally a series of freshwater swamps, which were drained using convict labour in the 1860s. Later it was a focal point during the Western Australian gold rushes of the 1890s when many of its buildings, especially the hotels, were there to meet the needs of the gold miners. Still today you can have a meal and a drink at the famous Brass Monkey Hotel, built in 1896, which is said to be the most photographed hotel in WA.
Northbridge is a real discovery if you are looking for restaurants, cafés, bars or nightclubs. William Street is the hub of a dining and entertainment area that will leave you spoiled for choice. You can dine indoors or outdoors – there are all-weather facilities – at any time of the year. You’ll be offered almost every kind of cuisine, with a particular focus on Mediterranean dishes.
There’s plenty of shopping and entertainment in Northbridge too, all within a few steps of your hotel. To discover the cultural centre of Northbridge, head to James Street and James Street Mall. There you’ll find the Western Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Theatre and many other arts and entertainment venues, including cinemas. An exciting new development is the Northbridge Piazza. It is a multi-purpose community centre with a performance area and a giant outdoor LED screen. You can relax on the grassed seating area and see films, talks, documentaries, sports and music presentations, 24 hours a day if you want to – all for free! You can also catch live performances and festivals there, which makes the Piazza a must-see item on your list. Nearby, Russell Square is another large public space, which is a venue for the Festival of Perth. You can see, on permanent display, 30 sculptures that have been designed and created by local artists.
