Accommodation In Ayr

Like many northern Queensland towns, Ayr is famous for its laidback and carefree lifestyle, down-to-earth locals and fantastic weather. Boasting over 300 days of sunshine every year, winter doesn't see temperatures drop below 11 degrees. Sound great? That's because it is. Book a hotel in Ayr today and come enjoy it for yourself!

A prosperous rural community, Ayr is the main town in the Burdekin Shire. It's the sugar cane capital of Australia, and produces a third of Australia's mangoes. For visiting fishermen the waterways and rich network of mangrove lined creeks is pure heaven, as the entire region is a mecca for both crabbing and chasing the prized fighting fish - the barramundi.

Nearby the Alva beach offers endless kilometres of unspoilt, sandy coastline. Throw a line in beach fishing, or try your hand at kite or wind surfing. It's also the closest launch point for the world famous dive wreck, the SS Yongata. The surrounding wetlands are paradise for birds and birdwatchers come from all over to try and spot one of the 280 species that call this area home.

A scenic drive will take you up Mount Kelly. Only a ten minute drive from Ayr, it offers spectacular views of the flat farmlands and wetlands in the surrounding area. While you're in town check out the Burdekin River Bridge, the best known local landmark as it's the only bridge in Australia that has been constructed without a firm foothold on land.

No trip is complete without catching a show at the Burdekin theatre, or strolling through the local masterpieces in the Artcover gallery. Ye Old Machinery Place is an interesting museum, showcasing technology both old and new. Also be sure to take your kids to check out the 60 metre carpet snake (sculpture!) at Plantation Park.

Only 88 kilometres southeast of Townsville, Ayr is the perfect place to get a taste of true Aussie hospitality. The great range of restaurants and cafes will keep you far from hungry, and be sure to try your hand at fishing. With the largest rate of boat ownership (per head) of population in Australia, it really is a paradise on the water. Book your Ayr accommodation today and see wot all the fuss is about!
