To learn more about the town's coal history pay a visit to Waikato Coalfields Museum, where you’ll also hear about the industry's tragic events and find some lovely gardens complete with a charming picnic spot. Enthusiasts can see even more at the Rotowaro Open Cast Mine, and head underground for a glimpse of a former working mine. The gigantic power station bears testament to the formidable power of coal, and it is the biggest thermal power station in the country.

Around Huntly you can enjoy some spectacular lakes for waterskiing, sailing and fishing, as well as cascading waterfalls, lush farmland and a number of scenic walking trails. Trek along the Hakarimata Walkway and enjoy the best of the New Zealand bush, with towering kauri trees, babbling steams, lovely waterfalls, and plenty of birds and wildlife. The Lake Hakanoa Walkway leads you past some waterside houses, the pretty Lake Rotoiti sits in the heart of lovely parkland, and you can wander along the river for some great views. Huntly is in the tribal area of Waikato-Tainui and there are heaps of places of cultural interest in the area. With plenty of Maori history, there are many sacred and revered spots close to the town. These include Te Ohaaki, Kaitimutimu, Te Kauri, and the home of a previous Maori Queen, Waahi Pa.
