Boasting 24 exquisitely appointed luxury suites, The Luang Say Residence extend through 6 stand alone pavillions and offer a contemporary reflection of life in the French colonial era.
The foyer in the main residence is built from local stone, its diamond shaped interior reminiscent of houses from the colonial period. A wooden ornamental staircase rises through the centre of the lobby to an open floor where a skylight illuminates the space and draws in the mountain breezes.

When UNESCO chose Luang Prabang as a World Heritage site, the organisation listed 33 temples and 111 historic Lao-French buildings for specific restoration. It also described Luang Prabang as the 'best-preserved traditional town in Southeast Asia'.
The main historical sites are clustered around four main roads located on a peninsula between the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers. Temples and monasteries occupy almost every street and in the early morning, hundreds of monks wander the lanes of the old town collecting alms. A tour of the temples is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the spirit and charm of this ancient capital.
Before visiting the temples proper, a trip to the Royal Palace Museum is a useful and enjoyable way to find out more about the history of Laos and its people. The exhibits are housed in a riverside residence built for the King and his family in 1904 by the French. 'Traditional Lao designs blend with French architectural style' and many of the rooms are exactly as they were on the day when the royal family was forced into exile after the revolution. The walls of the palace are decorated with paintings and scenes from everyday life in Laos.
Wat Xiang Thong is generally thought to be the grandest temple in Luang Prabang. Constructed in the 16th Century by the Lao royal family it is a fine example of early temple architecture. 'A huge, tiled mosaic on one of the temple's walls depicts the tree of life and ancient statues in the main temple date back centuries'.
For more insights into the city's religious history, a visit to see the stucco reliefs at Wat Mai or the Buddha images made from precious materials at Wat Visoun, offer further fascinating trips.
Another definite highlight is a climb up the conical Phou Si Wat, which occupies a hill in the centre of town, and affords spectacular views across the Mekong River and surrounding mountains.
