Ancient Buddhist ruins gracefully ageing among surrounding tranquil nature—Sukhothai is one of the most beautiful and mysterious places to visit in Thailand. The importance of Sukhothai cannot be understated and as the first capital of Thailand it is also known to be the home of the golden age of Thai culture. Book a stay in one of our Sukhothai hotels and absorb the incredible history and spirituality this old city radiates. Dating back to the 13th Century and still in remarkably good condition, it is no surprise that Sukhothai has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. The area spreads almost 45sq kilometres in total and the best way to make your way around is by renting a bicycle. Wake up early enough and catch a glorious sunrise gently lifting over the Buddhist sculptures and temples. An amazing photo opportunity if ever there was one. However, if you're not an early starter then be sure to catch the sun make its way back down because some equally stunning views can be seen. Cycle around the vast site and stop off at any of the ruins for a closer inspection. There are various cafes and restaurants for a pit stop along the way too. Return to your Sukhothai guest house in the evening to rest those aching feet and think back on a day well spent. For those with more time there are equally enjoyable ruins slightly further out of town. These are located at Si Satchanalai and Chaliang. Alternatively if you feel like a bit of a break from the ruins there is the Sawankhalak Pottery Museum in the new town.
