Koh Phangan resort

Koh Phangan is one of the most tranquil Thai islands with sleepy beaches and a slow pace of life that encourages longer stays, but it is also home to the biggest beach party in Thailand which erupts once a month during the full moon. It's an island of two extremes and well worth visiting.

Combining both of these extremes makes for a fantastic holiday as the merging of utter relaxation and one night of big partying will leave lasting memories. However, the partying isn't mandatory and we have a choice of Koh Phangan hotels that are focused on the calmer, more relaxing elements the island boasts. Arguably the most peaceful and secluded beaches on the island are located in the north-west region with three of the best being Thong Nai Paan Noi, Thong Nai Paan Yai and Bottle Beach. Seclusion doesn't come easy and all of these beaches can only be accessed via four wheel drive over some occasionally treacherous terrain but once there you won't regret the extra effort. Other beaches on the island are easier to get to, with the most popular being Haad Rin. Haad Rin is the number one stop for alcohol hungry backpackers and unsurprisingly is the location for the full moon party. When the moon is full thousands of people descend on Haad Rin to party until sunrise. The beach becomes swamped with inebriated partygoers having a good time and although it may not be suited to everyone it's worth going to for the experience.

Using your Koh Phangan hotel as a base, it's a great idea to take advantage of the crystal clear sea that surrounds most of the island. Diving tours can be arranged to well known sites such as Sail Rock whilst good snorkelling is also possible at several beaches. Day boat trips to get to the island's harder to reach beaches are also recommended. Generally Ko Phangan hotels range from basic backpacker huts to the most extravagant five star lodgings and whatever your budget there is bound to be something suitable.
