With over 250 wild elephants, 200 species of bird as well as deer, bears, tigers and even leopards, the National Park is the habitat for a huge variety of animals and many of these can be seen by visitors. With an average temperature of approximately 23 Celsius, the cool climate is ideal for hiking and exploring the vast area of land. This includes the highest mountain in the region, Khao Rom which reaches a peak of 1351 metres. Budding photographers will find plenty of opportunities to take some fantastic shots and one of the best places to capture on film is Haew Suwat. This is the dramatic waterfall which was featured in the Hollywood movie, The Beach. Cycle around the National Park to cover more ground and see the thick forests and grasslands. To make the most of this part of Thailand we recommend staying in a Khao Yai hotel for at least a couple of nights. Outside of the National Park there is plenty more to see in the Khao Yai region. Various wineries exist, some dating back to the 1980s and others a bit more recent but definitely worth your time. For a bit more nature there is even Wang Nam Kheo, otherwise known as the 'Switzerland of Thailand'.
