Ohakune offers the perfect base for exploring the Central Plateau. It includes the World Heritage Tongariro National Park - home to Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, via a series of walks or mountain bike trails. Enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Turoa Ski Area. It offers New Zealand?s highest ski area with 9 lifts, giving access to 500 hectares (about 1200 acres) of patrolled terrain and Australasia?s longest vertical at 720m. No matter when you visit Ohakune, the area offers something for everyone.
Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty to get excited about in Ohakune. The National Park is not only the snow sports mecca of the North, but it is also an excellent place for tramping, mountain biking, canoeing and loads more! For trampers, the Tongariro Crossing is a must and for mountain bikers, the 42nd traverse should not be missed and you would not be disappointed!! You can fish all year round for trout in the mighty Tongariro River; and to top your day off, after all your outdoor activities; unwind by soaking those aching limbs in the outdoor hot tub under the stars!
