Batam is one of 3000 islands in the Indonesian Riau archipelago, on the Straits of Malacca and only 20kms (or 30 minutes by fast ferry) to Singapore, making it the perfect location for a weekend break or a longer more relaxed holiday. Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist temple, one of the largest temples in South Asia, or visit Dewi Kuong Im Monument to the Buddhist goddess of prosperity. Visit the historical site of the former Vietnamese refugee camp on Galang where more than 100,000 people stayed in temporary accommodation in the 1970s and 1980s.
