Considered by some as the "Shopping Capital of the World", Bangkok certainly has it all.
Your shopping can start right here in the hotel at our jewelry store, tailor, silk shop/dressmaker, or with our extensive range of souvenirs at the gift shop.
When you venture out of the hotel, there is limitless variety. Arts and crafts are probably the most popular buys for visitors and these range from inexpensive wicker ware to valuable antiques. The most popular shopping center in Bangkok for Thais and visitors alike would have to be the Chatuchak Weekend Market, just a short Skytrain ride away. With over 6,000 stalls, you can find anything your heart desires from clothing, accessories, crockery, cutlery, linen and furniture to colourful hill-tribe artifacts, Thai silk, precious gems, finely crafted silverware, antiques and even pets.
Other popular market areas include Pratunam Market (within walking distance of Siam City Hotel), Sukhumvit and Silom Roads, and Patpong Night Market, all of which are accessible from the Skytrain. Bangkok is not just limited to market style shopping but also has an extensive selection of shopping malls like the World Trade Center, Emporium, Siam Discovery Center and Mah Boon Krong, again all easily accessible from the Skytrain.
Our Guest Relations Staff can assist you with directions, maps and tourist information booklets.
You really don't have to go far to be at some of the "must see" historical attractions in Bangkok. In fact, just across the road is the Suan Pakkard Palace Museum - this complex of five Thai-style teak houses occupies a peaceful garden and is home to an important collection of Asian antiques. The highlight for some tourists is the Lacquer Pavilion which houses a beautiful collection of black and gold lacquered murals retrieved from Ayuthaya Province by Prince Chumbhot.
The Marble Temple is also located on Si Ayuthaya Road near Chitralada Palace and European influence on Thai design is exemplified here. In the room of the ashes of King Rama V is the most revered copy of Phisanulok's Phra Buddha Chinarat. In the cloister there are some 53 different images of Buddha, both originals and copies of images from around Thailand and other Buddhist countries assembled by the late King Rama V.
Vimanmek Palace is just down the road from the Marble Temple. It is the world's largest golden teak structure. The three-story palace contains 81 rooms, halls and ante-chambers. A guided tour inside the building is provided to visitors.
The Grand Palace - No visit to Bangkok is complete without a visit to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo (which houses the famous Emerald Buddha), located in Rattanakosin Island, the heart of Bangkok's cultural heritage. Exquisite architecture is evident on every building within the compound and tour guides in different languages are available inside the Palace at a small charge. It is essential that appropriate attire be worn to enter this Palace.
Khao San Road is the world-famous hang-out for backpackers from around the world. Located on the outskirts of Rattanakosin Island and not far away from Siam City Hotel, the area is popular for souvenirs, food stalls, book shops, cafés and bars.
Other major attractions within Bangkok include Wat Pho (home of the reclining Buddha), Jim Thompson's Thai House, Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Ratchadamnoen Boxing Stadium, Flower Market, National Museum, The Giant Swing and much more.
You can also take many half or full daytrips outside of Bangkok that make for a perfect day out. Trips can be arranged to the Ancient Capital of Ayuthaya, the Damnern-Saduak Floating Market, Ko Kret Pottery Village, The River Kwai or to several locations that have Elephant Riding.
This information is intended as a glimpse at the many attractions in Bangkok and beyond. Staff at the Travel/Tour Desk located in our lobby will be happy to assist you with arrangements for excursions in Bangkok and the surrounding districts.
