PORT SORELL is situated on the North West Coast of Tasmania and is known today as the "Port of Golden Beaches". It is the hidden "jewel" of Tasmania, because it boasts a climate not that dissimilar to the mediterranean, with low rainfall and a high level of sunshine throughout the year.
You can enjoy various activities in the area - golf, tennis, bowling or visit the local Resort for a game of pokies. Why not take a stroll along the many walking tracks, or maybe a dip in the clear blue ocean. Many water sports, such as jet and water skiiing, board riding and fishing from the jetty are enjoyed by visitors to the area.
HAWLEY BEACH & FORESHORE RESERVE
Located at the end of the Hawley Esplanade, which follows on from Alexander Street. This beach is one that all the family can enjoy, the rustic red lichen covered rocks where rock pools can be explored. Walk and feel the rippled sands beneath the soles of your feet. Swimming in the crystal blue water in summer, or bring a pushbike and ride along the many tracks to spot wildlife.
FREERS BEACH
Located at the end of Freer Street, Shearwater. Great for bush walks, dog walking, fossicking and frolicking. Enjoy the community art mosaics at Freers Park Grasslands, on the foreshore.
PANATANA RIVULET
Located off Wilmot Street, then Rice Street. A great spot for family fun with a park. Fenced shallow toddlers pool, bbqs, picnic seats and toilet block. Boat ramps for launching are available here, and it's only a short stroll along the shore to the Mary's Creek footbridge. You can read on the interpretive panels about nearby Bakers Beach (accessible by road from Narawntapu National Park), and the different islands (see below).
THE ISLANDS
Spy Island
Penguin, Rabbit and Shell Islands
As early as 1826 there were Fowlers (bird hunters), hunting swans on the southern arms of the estuary. Shells were collected and burnt for lime on Shell Island.
Penguin, Shell and Rabbit Island can all be viewed from the coast around Port Sorell.
The various outlying islands are part of Narawntapu National Park. Strong walkers can access them on foot with appropriate shoes and water supplies, but please check tides before accessing across the sand flats, because they cut off at high tide and there are treacherous currents, and deep dangerous troughs.
Why not visit Narawntapu National Park, which is about 20 minutes from Port Sorell. A coastal and bush land park, featuring the beautiful Bakers Beach. Rich in both Aboriginal and European heritage, the park has an abundance of mammal and bird life. For the best chance to catch a glimpse of Tasmanian marsupials, especially cute Wombats, Wallabies and Forester Kangaroos. Best time to visit, is at dusk. Enjoy numerous walking tracks, which cater for all levels of fitness. Swimming, fishing and bird watching are popular. Visit the great interpretation centre for park passes and local knowledge on flora and fauna. The National Park offers many short and long walks.
Why not enjoy one of the many wonderful walks in the Port Sorell area. You can get a detailed brochure of self guided walks in Port Sorell, from the Port Sorell Visitor Information Centre.
AUBREY LUCK RESERVE
Joyce Street, Hawley Beach
Enjoy a gentle walk through the well maintained Aubrey Luck Reserve, and enjoy the natural bushland amongst the Casuarinas and Blackwoods, home to various Tasmanian Native Animals - Bennett's Wallabies, Pademelon's, Eastern Barred and Brown Bandicoots, Wombats and a wonderland of various birdlife.
