One of Villasimius’ many cultural attractions that is worthy of mention, is the “Fortezza Vecchia” (Old Fortress), which currently houses an archaeological museum and is located on a headland near Capo Carbonara. The building was erected in around the XIV century and was restructured in the sixteenth century at the will of Phillip II, as part of a programme of massive fortification of the coastal zone, finalised as a means of protection against the Barbarian-Turkish attacks. The tower of Porto Giunco also dates to the XVI century: built in ashlars of local granite and reachable from the beach along a footpath, or by car from the Capo Carbonara side.
But particular attention must also be paid to the lighthouse on the “Isola dei Cavoli”, built in the second half of the nineteenth century and now the site of Cagliari University’s Research Centre and also the San Luigi tower, on the “Isola di Serpentara”, which can both be reached from the tourist port.

The “Cava Usai” (Quarry) still remains as a memorial to the mining vocation of the area, which characterised industry in Villasimius for such a long time. It sprang up in the second half of the nineteenth century and was active until the fifties of the twentieth century. As well as the ruins of the disused plant, “Cava Usai” offers the splendour of a pebbly beach, lapped by turquoise coloured waters.
These coastal wonders are flanked by traditions rooted in the heart of the people; for example the Feast of the “Madonna del Naufrago”, of Santa Maria and”San Raffaele Arcangelo”. The first is normally held on the third Sunday in July and includes a procession as far as the “Isola dei Cavoli”, culminating with the deposition of a bunch of flowers at the underwater statue of the Virgin with Child, made by the contemporary sculptor, Pinuccio Sciola.

The second feast is held instead in the first week of September, with folk groups and parades of decorated carts. The Feast of San Raffaele, every 24th October, includes firework displays, singing and traditional dancing.
