Second only to Rhodes in popularity and population, Kos (koss) is a mellowed-down version of its big sister to the south. Beyond the resort hotels that welcome arrivals, Kos offers another less commercial face once you let the island get under your skin. Elongated and running almost west to east, Kos offers a spread of things to see and do – from beaches and bars to cycling and cars with which to tour verdant hills, remote coves, and high-energy beach resorts.
Archaeology buffs will find their niche in the home of western medicine. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, lived and practised here. The island has a good balance of amenities and attractions, and oodles of room to spread out. Kos certainly grows on you, but it needs a little more time than you might at first believe.
