The Village represents the Auckland of yesteryear, redeveloped as a shopping maze, and crammed full of modern merchandise.
The curious will be rewarded by an exploration down Scarborough Terrace, where Number 24 once saw service as an Officer's Quarters, and in the Reserve beyond lie the neglected remains of painter Goldie's garden.
The Catholic Church, midway up Parnell Road dates back to 1861, and the Anglican Cathedral at the top is open daily for conducted tours.
Round the corner, in Gladstone Road are the justly famous Parnell Rose Gardens. Here from Fred Ambler's look out you can watch the yachts head out to the Gulf, or head down to the sandy beach at Judge’s Bay. Historic St Stephen’s Chapel and Churchyard on the knoll deny connection with the Parnell Baths.
From the Parnell City Lodge a pleasant stroll through the tree-shaded Domain will bring you to the Museum, and the tropical plant Conservatory.
Kite flyers favour the slopes below the War Memorial museum, and you can lunch at the Tea Kiosk next to the Duck Pond.
From the Duck Pond a bush walk leads along a stream and emerges in Stanley Street. Across the road The University of Auckland begins and extends across Symonds Street to Albert Park. The Art Gallery, with its shaded coffee shop and water fountain is a pleasant stopover – one block from Queen Street and the commercial heart of Auckland.
Or you can head in the other direction along Parnell Road until it meets Broadway, Newmarket.
We are right in the centre, here at the Parnell City Lodge. Leave your driving and parking worries behind and enjoy Auckland and at its relaxed and relaxing best.
