Bintulu is a town at the mouth of the Kemena River in the state of Sarawak on the Island of Borneo. Latitude 3 degrees North and longitude 113 degrees East. Borneo is the third largest island in the world.
The name Bintulu is said to be derived from "Meta Ulau" a word from the local Melanau dialect. This means "the place where heads taken in war were smoked" and it refers to the headhunting practice at that time. The name changed to Mentulu, then Bentulau and finally to what it is known today.

Batang Kemena Safari ? An Adventure to Native Lands
Cruise for four hours by speedboat or express boat along the Batang Kemena to reach Sebauh Pandan, Labang and Tubau. Then take 65 kilometers overland trip on timber tracks to another river system, the Rajang River, to reach Belaga. You will be fascinated by the natives ? Ibans, Kenyahs, Kayans and Punans ? in their natural settings. Long house, timber camps, mangrove trees and ?Nipah? palms line up the river bank.
Tanjung Batu Beach ? An Ideal Place for a Picnic
As the name implies, is your perfect retreat for sun, sea, sandy beaches and fun. For additional comfort of your outing, changing and wash rooms are available. Taman Tumbina ? A living Heritage

Situated on a 12 hectare site at the Tanjung Batu Coastal Reserve about four kilometers from town center, the park is no doubt a source of living heritage with educational and recreational values. Its setting on a hill top overlooking the South China Sea and the Bintulu Town is surely a sight to behold and definitely not to be missed. Feast your eyes with a first hand view of the State's official bird, the Hornbill; the fearless eagles; the orang utans' the flamingoes'; the only tigers and lions in Borneo's crocodiles; pythons and many more. And stroll through the matured gardens and walk-in aviary along the way. Feel the freshness and cleanliness of the environment.
Similajau National Park
Take a 20-minute drive along the coastal road from Bintulu Town and enter the Similajau National Park, once a remote and unknown place is now transformed into a tourist attraction in this energy town. Covering an area of more than 7,000 hectares, the park offers you one of the most beautiful and unspoiled golden beaches in the country and home to over 850 species of birds and 24 varieties of mammals. For overnighters, basic facilities such as chalets and hostels are available. A Forest Department's information center is on site too to assist visitors.
Niah National Park
A two-hour drive from Miri or Bintulu, the park has a VIP rest house and chalet or hostel accommodation for overnight stays. That is Niah National Park.
Niah National Park is one of Sarawak?s smaller national parks but it is certainly one of the most important, and has some of the most unusual visitor attractions. The park?s main claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation in the region. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found at Niah, making the park one the most important archaeological sites in the world.
