Mount Maunganui (Mauao) provides a relaxed clean green environment at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour with easy walking tracks and a spectacular view of the coastline and surrounding area from its summit which rises 232 metres from the sea. The Mount is a narrow peninsula that separates the sheltered harbour from the Pacific Ocean. Pilot Bay, on the inner harbour offers sheltered berthing for the many cruise ships visiting the port during the season as well as safe swimming beaches, water sports including diving, yachting, canoeing and kayaking from the shade of tall phoenix palms and spectacular sunsets over the Kaimai Ranges in the distance. On the eastern ocean beach side, lies one of the world's best surf beaches and soft sand where many national and international water sports competitions take place.

Soak away aches and pains at the Mount Hot Pools which lie at the base of Mauao. They are the country's only hot salt water pools with a variety of pools including private pools, heated between 32 and 40 degrees.

The Mount Mainstreet Shopping area of Downtown the Mount lies midway between Pilot Bay and the surf beaches. It offers a range of accommodation choices with boutique shops, beauty and hair salons, bars, cafes and award winning restaurants to suit all tastes.

Tauranga Airport offers access to gliding, skydiving and sightseeing and is located a short drive away from the downtown area as are two golf courses, the sports stadium and other local sports venues, the aquatic centre and a number of service clubs. The Mount offers the ideal location from which to enjoy the various attractions to be found in the wider Tauranga, Rotorua and Bay of Plenty region.
