Rich green valleys and lofty volcanic peaks surround the city of Bandung in West Java. The history of West Java is immersed in trade: the first contact points in Indonesia for Indian traders where here, and it was here that the Dutch and British first set foot in the archipelago! For 300 years the region was part of the Dutch East Indies’ administration. Bandung is located only 180 kms from Jakarta and has a much slower pace of city life even though it is so close to Jakarta and has over 2 million people.

A short drive from Bandung lies the volcano of Tangkuban Perahu. It has three craters that you can walk through: Kawah Ratu, ‘Queen Crater’; Kawah Domas, ‘Domas Crater, and Kawah Upas, ‘Upas Crater’. The panoramic views of the countryside and the emitting sulphur fumes are awe-inspiring. Make sure you take a guide if you hike down to the crater floor where the colours of the lake will amaze you with its turquoise/white coloured water and yellow stained land. You can also walk through the forests on the slopes of the volcano. Close to the volcano is the hot sulphur spring of Maribaya where you can soak and swim in the warm waters, whilst enjoying the view of the 25 meter waterfall set against the mountain cliff.
