The current building dates back to 1886, but originally the site contained Astley's Ampitheatre, which opened in 1854 and contained a stage and an equestrian ring. The Princess Theatre was renovated and re-opened in 1989 with Les Misérables and then The Phantom of the Opera, which established records for the longest running show ever staged in Victoria.
