Heading to an event at the Forum Theatre? Then why not stay close by in one of our hotels near the Forum, Melbourne? The Forum Theatre, previously known as the State Theatre, is located in Melbourne's CBD at the corner Russell and Flinders Streets, and features a Moorish Revival exterior. The Forum Theatre was opened in 1929 with 3371 seats, which made it the Australian theatre with the largest seating capacity at the time. In the 1960s the theatre was converted into two cinemas and in 1978 the theatre added to the Victorian Historic Buildings Register. Renovations in 1981 saw the building divided into Forum I and Forum II and it was redeveloped again in 1995 and later bought by David Marriner. Today Forum I, located on the ground floor, is a large auditorium which plays host to numerous bands, artists, comedians and other events. Forum II, located on the third floor, is a smaller venue mainly used for film screenings. The Forum Theatre is also used annually as a venue for the Melbourne International Film Festival.
