Arezzo is located at the center of Italy. It stand on hill at the center of a wide basin, surrounded by the hills and the mountains which close four beautiful valleys: Casentino, Upper Valdarno, Valdichiana and Upper Valtiberina. Worth visiting are Casentino and its splendid forest, Castles, Hermitage of Camaldoli and Franciscan Shrine of La Verna, as well as well as the solemn beauty of Valdichiana plain and the soft colors of Valtiberina. Apart from a fine landscape, the valleys of Arezzo offer numerous artistic treasures.
Arezzo was one of the most important Etruscan cities, later ruled by the Romans, which reached its apex in the Middle Ages, around the year 1000. The city has preserved the memory of its past, and this makes the visit remarkably interesting. Monuments, palaces, churches and works of art from the Middle Ages to Renaissance have embellish the city, making it a real tourist jewel of Tuscany. Among so many wonderful architectural and artistic expressions, we like to point out the Pieve of Santa Maria, the Vasari Loggias, the Fraternità dei Laici Palace, and the churches of San Domenico and Santa Maria delle Grazie. The church of San Francesco contains one of the most important works of art of the world: the Legend of the True Cross (Leggenda della Vera Croce), the fresco by Piero della Francesca. The Archaeological Museum, among other masterpieces, displays the “Cratere Euphronius”, a marvelous decorated vase of ancient Greek origins. The church of San Domenico boasts a recently restored cross by Cimabue.
Arezzo was the birthplace of many great men, among which Mecenate, Petrarca, Masaccio, Signorelli, Guido Monaco, Piero della Francesca, Vasari, Pietro Aretino, Cesalpino, Redi, Fossombroni.
Events that shouldn’t be missed are; the Joust to the Saracen (Giostra del Saracino), the Antique Fair and the Gold Fair.
