Hotel Olympos, Pyrgos

The city of Pyrgos ( Pirgos ) is located approximately 100km southwest of the city of Patra. Pyrgos is the capital and the largest city in the county of Ilia.

Pyrgos is the trading and communication centre of the county, with a modern and cosmopolitan environment.

It is connected with Athens and all the cities and the villages of the area with KTEL buses and OSE train network. The city is built on top of hills, with main hill being "Eparheion".

According to traditional myth, this hill belonged to Tsernotas, an immigrant farmer from Kalavrita. During the 15th century, Tsernotas found a big treasure.

He gave a part of this treasure to the Turkish Sultan Selim A’. The sultan, pleased by this gesture, rewarded Tsernotas, and made him “bey” (an important high officer), by giving him this area.

Tsernotas then built his tower (pyrgos). During the years people started to occupy the area around the tower, creating a hamlet at the beginning, and much later a city.

Pyrgos today is a cosmopolitan city, with luxury hotels and restaurants, and very interesting buildings, with impressive architecture, such as the Municipal Theatre and the Municipal Market, both designed by the German architect Chiller.

The modern Neoclassical building where the town hall is located, which was a donation by Giannis Latsis (a ship owner), is also very impressive.
