Headlands

Surf Highway 45's 105 km coastline produces some of the country's most legendary surf breaks. Names like Stent Road, Ahu Ahu Road and the Graveyards are legends within surfing circles and several breaks can be found minutes away from Headlands such as Arawhata Road, Kina Road for windsurfing and The Dumps for kneeboarding.

Opunake Beach is just a two-minute walk to this wonderful well sheltered beach with long cliff headlands at each end. This is a safe patrolled beach with toilets and general store. In 1881 a jetty was constructed on the north headland of Opunake Beach but plans to redevelop Opunake as the main port of Taranaki never came to fruition. The remains of the jetty can still be seen today.

Opunake Walkway, this 7km walk takes you around Opunake Lake and across the cliffs, providing views of Te Namu Pa. There are a number of historical sites and points of interest throughout the walk. The lake is popular for boating, swimming and water skiing.

Stony River Walkway, this 4km walk has excellent views of Mt Taranaki and the Pouakai Range and follows the Kaihihi Stream and Stony River. Start at the swing bridge on Old South Road Okato.

Cape Egmont Lighthouse - Cape Road Pungarehu, situated on the most westerly point of Taranaki. The lighthouse was transferred from Mana Island, Wellington in 1881 and was electrified by power from diesel generators in 1951. It was later connected to the country?s electricity supply. The light can be seen from 22 nautical miles on a clear night.
