Dunedin is a beautiful city on the eastern coast of New Zealand's South island with many attractions for all ages.
The city is renowned for its stunning stone buildings like the railway station, which is said to be the most photographed building in New Zealand, the town hall or the many churches. The city centre also offers ample shopping opportunities and art galleries to browse. Many restaurants and cafes are within easy walking distance from the Octagon, the heart of the city.
Cadbury’s chocolate factory and Speight’s brewery are a “Must See” when in town and offer factory tours for the hungry and thirsty. On a rainy day pay a visit to the Otago museum with its discovery world and tropical rainforest for children or take a splash at the Moana Pool.
The city has many parks to relax. The Commodore motel is located right next to the well maintained Dunedin Botanic Gardens with great children’s play area and ducks to feed and its world famous Rhododendron Dell and Azalea Garden. Just south of the town centre is the newly opened Chinese Garden which is the only authentic Chinese Garden in New Zealand. Being a coastal city there are also many stunning beaches scattered in and around Dunedin. St. Clair beach is best known for its great surf and its hot salt water pool.
The Otago Peninsula is just a short drive from the city centre. It is renowned for its rare and rich wild life. Here visitors can get up close to penguins, albatrosses and see lions, visit the Portobello aquarium and enjoy the stunning beaches along the coast line. Also not to miss when visiting the peninsula is Larnach Castle with its amazing gardens.
Highly recommended when in Dunedin is to board the Taieri Gorge Railway for a truly amazing train journey through the rugged landscape of central Otago.
