Hakodate is the gateway to southern Hokkaido. As one of Japan's first treaty ports, it has always been looked at as one of the exotic port cities of Japan. Hakodate Asaichi, Hakodate Morning Market, The main attraction is Hokkaido's famous marine products such as squid and crabs. You can enjoy shopping for the huge selection of vegetables along bustling alleys from early morning. Inside the market are a number of restaurants which specialize in fresh seafood. Goryokaku Park Goryokaku Fort was the last battleground of the Boshin War in which Takeaki Enomoto (1836-1908) and Saizo Hijikata (1835-1869) fought against the government forces. The whole area of 250,853 sq. m. of Goryokaku Fort was later arranged as Goryokaku Fort Park. Cherry blossoms fill the park with admirers in spring. Hakodateyama Rooftop Ovservatory On fine days, the observation deck has a 360-degree panoramic view from Tsugaru Kaikyo Channel through Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. Between Hakodate Bay and Tsugaru Kaikyo, Hakodate has a unique geographical shape like a whale's tail fin. At night, you can see fan shaped towns ablaze with lights. In summer, isaribi (fishing lights to lure fish to fishing boats) shine out towards Tsugaru Kaikyo
